Launch of Topgolf Edison

Last month I attended a taste & tour media preview of Topgolf Edison at 1013 US Route 1 in NJ, before it opened to the public on December 23rd. If you think it's to cold to hit the driving range in the winter, think again. I've never been to a Topgolf venue, and was amazed to find myself at a heated driving range!

Topgolf Edison has three levels at 65,000 square feet, including a rooftop terrace with fire pits + area for live musical performances, lower lounge with free pool tables, shuffleboard and Xbox Kinect,  a full-service restaurant and multiple bars. This is the first ever Topgolf location in New Jersey, with 30 venues total across the US and 3 venues in the UK.

Each Topgolf location features climate-controlled hitting bays for year-round play, a chef-driven food and beverage menu, music, and hundreds of HDTVs. The microchipped golf balls score themselves, providing players with instant feedback on each shot's accuracy and distance.

Topgolf can be enjoyed by all ages and skill levels, with interactive experiences including Topgolf U lessons, leagues, The Topgolf Tour, KidZone parties, social and corporate events, and the World Golf Tour (WGT) app.

At Topgolf Edison, my experience was similar to bowling, where you are paying an hourly rate, with 1- 6 players per bay (102 bays total) and a 215 yard outfield. The rates are: Open to 12PM ($30/hour), 12PM-5PM ($40/hour) and 5PM to Close ($50/hour).

Featured winter brews at Topgolf Edison include: Ballast Point, Breckenridge Brewery, Bolero Snort, Brooklyn, Brewery, Demented Brewery, Dogfish Head, McKenzie's Hard Cider, River Horse & Yuengling.

Each player buys a one-time cost $5 membership card, which gives you access to play games, track everyone's golf ball scores and receive access to exclusive offers. There are also drivers and irons at each bay to choose from and use, so you don't have to worry about bringing your own.

In 2016, Topgolf had 12.2 million guests worldwide, averaging a 2 hour visit and 4-person group size. 45% of Topgolf guests play traditional golf once or less per year. I like going to the driving range, but I do not actually play golf. I'm actually horrible at hitting golf balls. I hit grounders! I/m definitely considering taking Topgolf U Lessons, with golf lessons starting at $25. Instruction with a Topgolf pro includes HD video analysis of your swing. You can sign up at topgolf.com/lessons

Topgolf is a very non-intimidating environment, with more than half of guests described as "non-golfers." Guests are 68% male / 32% female, with 54% between the ages of 18-34, and 38% of guests are families.

9 Topgolf locations are coming soon, with plans to open 7-10 locations per year for the next couple of years.
