The Big Chocolate Show Highlights 2019

The Big Chocolate Show 2019 took place on September 20 & 21 at the Resorts World Casino in Queens. This was quite a departure from previous shows as it has always taken place in Manhattan, and Queens was quite a trek but I do really love chocolate. I do hope The Big Chocolate Show returns to Manhattan next year though. This show seemed to have a smaller amount of exhibitors and less attendees. In previous years, vendors usually sampled whole pieces of chocolate. I felt like this time around the focus was more on selling chocolate, yet limited sampling was provided by some exhibitors. Please check out my highlights from this year's show below and my recap of the Decadent Evening of Chocolate and Cocktails.

Decadent Evening of Chocolate and Cocktails

On September 20, on the eve of The Big Chocolate Show, I attended the Decadent Evening of Chocolate and Cocktails presented by the Cocktail Guru at the Resorts World Casino NYC in Jamaica, NY. The tasting included chocolate friendly cocktails paired with sweet and savory desserts, all featuring Guittard Chocolate. My favorite pairings, which were both phenomenal were the Three Chocolate Budino + Bonette Brands and the Dark Chocolate and Pisco Shrimp Ceviche paired with Caravedo Pisco. I am hooked on budino but the only place I know where to get it is at Scarpetta in Las Vegas. If someone can direct me to where I can find budino in NYC please let me know!

Favorite Products from the Vermont Cheesemakers Festival

Sharing my favorite products from the Vermont Cheesemakers Festival! Some of these products are available online and others are only available in Vermont so lookout for them if you happen to be in the area! I ended up buying the jam, espresso hot fudge sauce, chocolate and iced cider at the festival. I'll be buying the honey online!

Blake Hill Preserves has the most amazing jams I have ever tasted. I couldn't leave without picking up the Tart Cherry with Cardamom & Port from The Cheese Pairing Collection. This will taste amazing with a scone, brie or fresh burrata.

Maplebrook Farm has the best ever authentic handmade burrata I have ever tasted. I wasn't even much of a burrata fan until I tasted this. They stretch curd into mozzarella and fill it was a luscious creamy center. The socft center, stracciatella, is comprised of cream and strands of mozarella, giving this cheese a distinct flavor. I would serve this up with fresh tomatoes, onions and mint.

The Shelburne Farms Cheddar Cheese has a few options including medium, sharp and extra sharp cheddar, aged from 6 months to 3-years, vacuum-sealed or waxed block. There's also tractor, beer and smoked cheddar.

It's Arthur's Fault! Espresso Hot Fudge Sauce would pair well with ice cream but honestly I would just eat this by the spoonful. It's currently sold out but hopefully will be back in stock soon. I have a feeling it won't be too long until I need to order another jar!

Burke Mountain Confectionary Dark Chocolate Maple Bourbon Truffles - I picked up a 2-piece box set and they were gone as soon as I opened the package!

Ariel's Honey Infusions are made with raw, local honey from Vermont. The Lavender Vanilla and Nourishing Nectar CBD are my two favorites. I prefer eating a spoonful, adding to my yogurt, or spreading over some brie with crackers.

Boyer's Iced Cider is a super sweet cider, made with the finest apples on a family farm in Monkton, Vermont. I opted for the 100 ml bottle, with 13.5% alcohol.

11th Annual Vermont Cheesemakers Festival Highlights

Sunday, August 11th was the first time I had ever attended the Vermont Cheesemakers Festival, at Shelburne Farms Coach Barn, along the shores of Lake Champlain. Did you know Vermont is a world class cheese state with the highest number of cheesemakers per capita - over 40 of them??? I had no idea until I experienced this festival! The 11th annual festival was filled with the most amazing cheeses, local foods, wines, craft beers and spirits, and the passionate artisans who make it all. The festival went from 10pm - 4pm, and you literally need all day to walk through all the vendors, indulge in samples and make purchases.

I did learn a few things during my trip, thanks to the festival and the presenting sponsor, Vermont Cheese Council, which is dedicated to the production and advancement of Vermont Cheese. Vermont has been home to cheesemakers since the 1800s, and is acknowledged as a national leader of the American artisanal cheese renaissance.

The Vermont Cheese Council is made up of 52 cheesemaking members, producing over 150 varieties of cheese. Vermont's world-class cheeses represent a full range of milks, types, textures and flavors. Vermont cheeses are made from cow, goat, and sheep milk, ranging from soft and spreadable cheeses to ones that are aged for months to bring out the complex and full flavor.

After experiencing this festival, I've by far tasted the best cheeses and coffee, and I certainly did not go home empty handed. I bought a number of items including chocolate, maple sugar candy, CBD nitrogen-infused cold brew coffee, iced wine, jam, and hot fudge sauce. The only thing I didn't purchase was cheese since I didn't bring a cooler with me, as I would have loved to take home some of the burrata and goat cheese. Each attendee is given an insulated bag upon arrival, but since my bag was getting heavier with each purchase, and my car ride home was five and a half hours, a rolling travel cooler would have been the most ideal to have with me.

I do feel like a cheese snob now, and most definitely have to come back to experience the Vermont Cheesemakers Festival again. These cheeses are so fresh, creamy, and have distinct flavor profiles, especially the aged cheeses. Since I didn't arrive to Shelburne Farms until Saturday, I missed the   Education Day filled with interactive seminars, guided tours of Shelburne Farms cheesemaking and pastures, plus a behind-the-scenes look at the art and science of artisan cheese. That would be interesting to learn about next time!

I want to thank the Vermont Cheesemakers Festival and Shelburne Farms for inviting me and having me as their guest! I'll be doing a separate blog post on Shelburne Farms as well as a round up of all my favorite items I purchased, as I imagine I'll be ordering more online! Attendees were also given a map with Vermont cheese trail for tours and tastings, so that would definitely be a fun trip in itself! Check out my highlights of favorite vendors I sampled!

At Shelburne Farms, the farmstead cheddar is made exclusively from the raw milk of their Brown Swiss cows. Their cheese is made using the traditional English chddar method, crafted by hand in their historic Farm Barn. The Shelburne Farms team produces about 170,000 pounds of cheddar annually! Their selection of handmade cheddars include six-month, one-year, tow year, three-year, smoked, clothbound, tractor, and beer.
